A viscoelastic foam material is sensitive to temperature and can have the quickness to bounce back to its normal shape after it has been compressed. For a mattress to be considered a memory foam mattress it should have been rated or graded by its visco-elasticity and its durability. Below is a list of criteria that determines if a mattress is a memory foam mattress or not.

1. Weight (foam's density with unit lb/ft2)

A foam's weight is ascertained by the quantity of chemicals used in the composition of the polyurethane foam. The more chemicals used, the higher is the density which means the more viscoelasticity it has. However, weight alone can not be used to ascertain the material's hardness or softness.

2. Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) Rating

Indentation Load Deflection tells the hardness or softness quality of a material. The lower the material the softer the foam and vice versa.

3. Resiliency

The resilience or springiness of a foam is determined by the percent of rebound of a steel ball dropped from 36 feet. A foam is highly resilient if it gives a very high rebound for the ball. In totality, if the foam is high in resiliency, the more durability it has in response to a compression force applied to it.

4. Tensile Quality

This denotes the stretch ability and capability of a foam, which is determined in pounds per square inch (lb/sq2) and how long it can be elongated before it tears.

This is of little significance when it comes to determining the viscoelasticity of a foam since foams are not normally stretched but are only compressed if slept or laid upon often.

The above rating scale may vary from foam batch to foam batch. There is no such thing as exact rating when it comes to memory foam mattresses.

Just remember that what is important is that the foam mattress you are using does what it is best known for --- best contour for your body's shape, thus allowing less pressure on the areas of your body which is pressed harder against the bed.

A quality memory foam mattress will always make your body feel great even after having spent a long time in bed.
